Guwahati, Aug 12: Not only criminals along the Indo-Bangladesh border but even our own BSF troopers posted along the international border are using Bangladeshi SIM cards. This was revealed by Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma while he was speaking at the function organized for the release of the ‘Digital North East Vision 2022’ in Guwahati on Saturday.
Sangma urged the Central government to improve mobile connectivity along the Indo-Bangla border on priority besides stating that it is a grave security concern.
According to reports, while the Bangladeshi networks are available on the Indian soil along the border, the Indian telecom companies have failed to provide strong network in these border areas.
The CM also stated that while Indian companies are penalized if their network crosses the border, Bangladeshi companies are free to function at their own will. Indian companies hence are reluctant to put up towers along the border which in turn has led to BSF troopers using Bangladeshi SIMs to talk to their families and that too at exorbitant rates, the CM further alleged.
It must be noted that earlier the BSF had repeatedly stated that it is facing difficulties to curb criminal activities along the international border due to the growing presence of the Bangladeshi telecom networks as most criminals use those Bangladeshi SIMs to ditch the Indian security layer.
